At Sunnyvale Sports Medicine and Orthopedic Center, two fellowship-trained, board-certified orthopedic surgeons serve patients across Sunnyvale and East Dallas with one shared goal: getting you back to the life you love. Dr. John Hibbitts, the practice's founding physician, brings more than 25 years of surgical expertise in joint replacement, arthroscopic shoulder surgery, and cartilage restoration. Alongside him, Dr. Reed Bartz contributes specialized training in sports-related injuries, knee reconstruction, and shoulder surgery from his fellowship at the Steadman Hawkins Clinic in Vail, Colorado. Together, they deliver the kind of dual-surgeon coverage and depth of orthopedic expertise that was once reserved for larger hospital systems, now available close to home.

John Hibbitts, M.D. | Orthopedic Surgeon & Sports Medicine Specialist

Dr. John M. Hibbitts is a Texas board-certified orthopedic surgeon and sports medicine specialist with more than 25 years of experience helping patients of all ages recover from pain and injury. Trained in arthroscopic surgery, total and partial joint replacement, and cartilage transplant, Dr. Hibbitts founded Sunnyvale Sports Medicine and Orthopedic Center in 1994 and has since performed hundreds of joint replacement surgeries, building deep expertise in shoulder, hip, and knee care.
After completing his education and residency, Dr. Hibbitts served as a team physician and medical director at both large hospital systems and private treatment centers in South Carolina and Texas. As an athlete and physically active person himself, he brings firsthand understanding to every patient's recovery journey.
Dr. Hibbitts is a proud member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, the American Medical Association, the South Carolina Medical Association, and the Texas Medical Association. Outside the clinic, he is a father of three, a long-time athlete who enjoys bodybuilding, rugby, Jiu Jitsu, and karate, as well as competitive handgun and rifle marksmanship.

Dr. Reed Bartz, M.D. | Orthopedic Surgeon & Sports Medicine Specialist

Dr. Reed Bartz, M.D., is a Houston native who specializes in sports-related injuries, knee and shoulder surgery, and general orthopedics. He graduated from Southern Methodist University with a Bachelor of Science in Economics, earned his M.D. from The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, and completed his Orthopedic Surgery Residency at Baylor College of Medicine. He then pursued advanced fellowship training in Sports Medicine and Shoulder Surgery at the prestigious Steadman Hawkins Clinic in Vail, Colorado.
As a former Assistant Professor at the University of Colorado, Dr. Bartz educated orthopedic residents and served as a team physician for university athletic programs. He has authored more than 15 peer-reviewed publications and received awards for orthopedic research. Dr. Bartz is also actively involved with Helicopters for Heroes and The Gary Barnett Foundation.

In his time away from the clinic, he enjoys fishing and golfing and is a proud father of four children.

What does an orthopedic surgeon focus on?

Orthopedic surgeons specialize in the diagnosis, treatment, and restoration of musculoskeletal conditions. They provide relief from both common and severe ailments including tendonitis, bursitis, bone fractures, and osteoarthritis.

What does "sports medicine” mean?

Sports medicine specialists focus on injuries and conditions caused by physical activity and sport. They treat strains, sprains, and acute injuries, with the goal of restoring full function and getting patients safely back to activity.

Comprehensive Orthopedic and Sports Medicine Care, Built Around You

Since founding Sunnyvale Sports Medicine and Orthopedic Center in 1994, Dr. Hibbitts has operated from a straightforward conviction: every patient, regardless of age or activity level, deserves direct access to high-caliber orthopedic care. That philosophy is what led him to build a practice centered on genuine outcomes, not high patient volume or rushed appointments.
When Dr. Reed Bartz joined the practice, that foundation expanded. Patients now benefit from two experienced orthopedic surgeons who consult collaboratively on complex cases, cross-cover when surgical schedules demand it, and bring complementary training to every clinical decision. For the competitive athlete recovering from an ACL tear, the weekend golfer managing a rotator cuff injury, or the patient considering joint replacement surgery for the first time, having two specialists available under one roof changes the quality of care in a meaningful way.

What Dual-Surgeon Coverage Means for Patients

For student-athletes and active adults in the East Dallas area, this model provides a practical advantage. A sports medicine doctor and an orthopedic surgeon rarely occupy the same exam room in most private clinics. Here, that collaborative standard is the baseline.
Dr. Bartz's sports medicine fellowship training directly informs how the practice evaluates and manages acute injuries and return-to-play decisions. Dr. Hibbitts's decades of experience as one of the area's leading joint replacement surgeons ensures that when conservative treatment reaches its limit, patients transition to surgical planning without delays or referral gaps.
The result is a clinic where a top knee specialist and a shoulder surgery expert are both accessible, coordinated, and invested in your specific recovery path.

Active Adults
From weekend warriors to competitive athletes, both physicians collaborate on complex injury and recovery planning.
Student Athletes
Expert sports medicine fellowship training informs every return-to-play decision for high school and college athletes.
Complex Reconstruction
Patients facing joint replacement or arthroscopic shoulder surgery benefit from combined surgical expertise and planning.

Conditions and Specialties

The surgical team at Sunnyvale Sports Medicine and Orthopedic Center treats a full spectrum of musculoskeletal conditions, including:
  • Knee injuries (ACL, meniscus, cartilage damage)
  • Shoulder injuries (rotator cuff tears, instability, labral repairs)
  • Total and partial hip and knee replacement
  • Arthroscopic shoulder surgery
  • Sports injuries (sprains, strains, tendon and ligament damage)
  • Osteoarthritis and chronic joint conditions
  • Fracture care and acute trauma
  • Bursitis and tendonitis
Whether you are searching for an orthopedic surgeon in Sunnyvale, a sports medicine doctor in East Dallas, or simply an orthopedic clinic near you with a proven track record, this practice was built to meet that need with two experienced physicians ready to help.

Two Surgeons, One Coordinated Standard of Care

A practice is only as strong as the expertise behind it. At Sunnyvale Sports Medicine and Orthopedic Center, that expertise comes from two complementary surgeons working in concert rather than a single practitioner working alone. The pairing of a veteran joint reconstruction surgeon with a fellowship-trained sports medicine and advanced arthroscopy specialist gives patients a depth of capability that solo practices simply cannot match.
Joint Reconstruction Authority

Dr. John Hibbitts

With roughly 30 years of surgical experience and hundreds of completed joint replacements, Dr. Hibbitts anchors the practice's reconstructive and complex-case capability across the shoulder, hip, and knee.
Sports Medicine & Arthroscopy

Dr. Reed Bartz

Fellowship-trained at the Steadman Hawkins Clinic, Dr. Bartz brings advanced arthroscopic technique and sports medicine expertise to acute injuries, ligament reconstruction, and return-to-play care.
When these two skill sets sit under one roof, patient care is elevated at every stage. Diagnosis, conservative treatment, and surgical planning happen within a single coordinated team, so complex cases move forward without the delays, handoffs, and communication gaps that come with outside referrals. A patient who begins with a sports injury and later requires reconstructive surgery never has to start over with a new practice or repeat their history to an unfamiliar provider.
This collaborative model means the right surgeon is matched to each procedure, second opinions are available in-house, and surgical schedules stay flexible through dual-surgeon coverage. The result is faster decision-making, more consistent follow-through, and a continuity of care that keeps patients with the team that already knows them.
  • Coordinated surgical planning across two specialties
  • Dual-surgeon coverage keeps scheduling flexible
  • In-house expertise eliminates the need for external referrals
  • Continuity of care from first visit through recovery
